| Aims The Liberation Museum sets itself the task of caring for, preserving, and exhibiting - in a resporsible way - the objects that represent the cultural inneritarace from the fighting that took place in the period 1939 - 1945 in Zeeland, and the actions in the Dutch East Indies in the period 1945 - 48 where forces from Zeeland took part. In addition the museum collects "oral history", where that can add extra light on the exhibits. By labelling education as its main target, the museum has chosen to awaken a historical consciousness in modern youth that enables them to appreciate just how precious peace is. Policy The Liberation Museum Zeeland conforms to the definition set by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1974, and was further worked out in the professional ethical code of conduct for The Netherlands museums: it states "A museum is a permanent establishment which serves society and its decelopments, is open to the public, not geared to making a profit, whose exhibits relate to people and their surroundings, to preservation, scientific research, and presents and informs about all this for the purpose of study, education and giving pleasure." The museum underlines this code of conduct and will employ these rules as the basis of aur action they take. The museum will also follow all the laws and instructions concerring the museum, the fellow-workers, the collections and public facilities. The museum will deliver a contribution to the realization among the local inhabitants, and visitors to Zeeland, of regional happenings during the Second World War, and also over the contribution made by Zeelanders in the years that they were active in het Indonesian archipelago. In addition the museum will play an active róle in education - especially for young people - concerning freedom, war and the distress of war, by giving access to the available cultural inheritance exhibits in a professional and expert way. With the educational establishments in Zeeland we will put together an active programme on this subject. With other (national) museum exhibiting on the same theme, we shall strive to establish a good working relationship in order to avoid duplication or overlap. |
