Information for Visitors

The Liberation Museum Zeeland is housed in a fully renovated genuine traditional Zeeland farm, in the village of Nieuwdorp. Nieuwdorp, one of the middle-sized villages in the municipality of Borsele, played an important róle during the Battle for the Scheldt.

Nieuwdorp was the gathering place for the Canadian and Scots Units whose job it was to invade the Island of Walcheren from the East. After the attack on the Sloedam seemed doomed to failure, it was decided to cross the Sloe in small boats leaving from the harbour of Nieuwdorp, and fall on the enemy from behind their backs. This plan known as Operation Mallard succeeded, and it was possible to relieve the troops that had been pinned down on the Sloedam for several days. Amongst other things, the Liberation Museum throws light on the "forgotten" Battle for the Scheldt, in which the Battle for the Sloedam played a crucial part.
